What is Koukan Nikki?
In Japan, there is a culture called “Koukan Nikki” (交換日記), i.e. “exchange diary.”
Traditionally, two people would take turns writing in a shared notebook
— daily thoughts, feelings, and small moments from life.
One person writes, the other replies, creating a quiet connection through words.
Unlike texting or instant messaging, Koukan Nikki is slower and more thoughtful.
You take time to write, wait for a reply, and experience Japanese in a more personal way.
It’s like a modern version of pen pal.
In this service, you write a diary entry in Japanese by hand, send a photo of your page, and receive a thoughtful reply in Japanese. If there is any mistakes or better expressions, you will also get gentle corrections and natural expressions.
Not just studying Japanese — but living in it, one page at a time.

About Me
Hi, I’m Yuka - a Japanese mum living in Australia.
YOUR JAPANESE EXCAHANGE DIARY PARTNER

As interest in Japan and the Japanese language continues to grow, I began noticing many people who could speak Japanese, but struggled to write it by hand.
Others were practicing Kanji for the JLPT, keeping Japanese diaries as a part of studies, or feeling lonely while living in Japan.
That was when I remembered “Koukan Nikki” (交換日記), exchange diaries, which I used to do when I was in fifth grade in Japan.
I would write about my worries, happy moments, and everyday life — things I could only share with that friend. I also remember being excited to use newly learned Kanji from school in my diary pages, and looking forward to getting the notebook back.
In today’s world of fast messages, AI tools, and screen-based learning, I believe there is still something special about writing by hand and receiving a thoughtful reply from another person, which instant messages can’t replicate.
That experience inspired me to create ”Koukan Nikki” — a slower, more human way to experience Japanese through real-life writing and connection.
I look forward to exchange diary pages!
